    General Information

    • Your domain is hosted on bizniz.net.
    • Bizniz Net is using the Sun Webservers running on Unix.

A basic understanding of the Internet and the World Wide Web is definitely a requirement for using Bizniz Net Hosting Services and some understanding of UNIX is also helpful.  Bizniz Net will provide basic technical support to help you get your WWW pages online, but Web page development, CGI scripting or troubleshooting of HTML or scripts require additional charges. If you lack an understanding of basic Internet skills such as FTP, Telnet, email, etc. we would suggest that you investigate development services and consulting.

The system you are sending files to is a UNIX system. UNIX is case  sensitive. The most common problem people have writing their first Web pages have is broken links or images which fail to load due to an incompatibility in case. File names are not case sensitive on a PC but IMAGE.JPG is not the same as Image.jpg or image.jpg  on a UNIX server. The easiest way to be sure you don't have this problem is to always use lower case when writing your HTML and naming files. In WS_FTP, click the Options button, select the Session tab and check "Force Lowercase Remote Names";. This will cause WS_FTP to always name your files in lowercase letters when they are transferred to the server.

    Accessing Your WWW pages

A page that says "Under Construction" is placed in all new accounts when they are created. This is the file you will replace with your new content.

You can access your WWW page by:

Uploading Files to Your WWW directory

To transfer your WWW files, you should use FTP. Most webpublishing programs have a build in publish on the web function",please read the directions of your program.  If you do not have an FTP client, you may  want to obtain WS_FTP from Stroud's Consummate Internet  Apps List or other shareware archive site. To set up WS_FTP for file transfer:

    WS_FTP
    http://www.ipswitch.com/

Upon opening WS_FTP the Session Properties window will pop up. If you have entered the information prior to this session, simply choose the Profile Name of the site you wish to use. If you have not already entered the site you are uploading to, click the New button to clear the fields and then enter the following:

Profile Name: My Bizniz Net Account
      Host Name/Address: yourdomainname.com
      Host_type: UNIX (standard)
      User ID: your user name
      Password: your password

If you are located behind a firewall or gateway, you may need to alter the settings to allow for Passive transfers. To do this, click on the Advanced tab and check the box next to Passive Transfer.

Next, click OK to log in.

The window on the left is the local listing and the window on the right is the remote listing. To upload files, simply highlight the files to transfer and either click and drag them from the local to the remote window or click the arrow button between the windows.

When you start the FTP client using your Bizniz Net username/password, the directory on the server  side will be /web/. You should place your WWW files in this directory. The WWW server looks for a file named index.html by default.

      Password Protection

Password protection is available but must be configured by the webmaster. Please contact us if you wish to use password protection.

A Note about robots, spiders & webcrawlers

Many of the WWW "search engines" are actually robots - programs which browse around on the WWW and report what they find. In general, this is good and will provide more exposure for your site with no effort on your part. However, there may be certain pages or entire sections of your site that you don't want publicized (particularly pages that are under development). If you have your own domain name, you can put a robot exclusion file in your  web-public file. You can also use META tags in your HTML to exclude robot indexing (this  will not work with all robots.) See Robots Exclusion for details.
